This is an end of life, mental capacity, and DNAR case and deals with ethical and legal issues. Choices have to be made about the DNAR status and care of an elderly patient who is admitted to hospital and who lacks capacity. Conflicting views from family members also have to be dealt with.

This is about confidentiality and truth telling. A patient is diagnosed with HIV but does not wish to inform his wife about his diagnosis. This case allows students to debate the core concepts of confidentiality and privacy from an ethical, legal, and professional perspective.

This is a “student ethics/professionalism” case. The case deals with the problems that arise when healthcare students encounter fellow healthcare students who have drug and alcohol problems.

Joseph Murray
This case is about organ transplant ethics and law. It involves a dying patient who is on ITU and soon becomes brain dead. As the case proceeds decisions have to be made as to whether the patient’s organs can be used for transplantation. The case is devised to help students explore some of the ethical dilemmas generated by deceased organ donation including the concept of death and brain death, consent for donation, family conflict and confidentiality.

Yasmin Abadi
This is a case about a young woman who wants a “virginity test” so that she can get married. Yasmin’s GP must decide whether to help Yasmin or deny her the test. Equality and diversity issues are raised as are the issues of professionalism, honesty and best interests.
